Israeli soldiers, heavily armed and masked, raided Al Jazeera’s bureau in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and imposed a 45-day closure order, without providing a reason. This move comes months after a ban on Al Jazeera operating inside Israel. Al Jazeera journalists are still unable to report from within Israel as the initial closure order was renewed.
Media rights groups have criticized the Israeli government for its restrictions on journalists, particularly Palestinian reporters on the ground in Gaza. Attacks against Al Jazeera reporters date back to before the war, with casualties including Ismail al-Ghoul and Samer Abudaqa. Al Jazeera has condemned the ban on reporting inside Israel, calling it a violation of human rights and access to information.
The raid on Al Jazeera’s bureau in Ramallah highlights Israeli control over the West Bank and comes after the UN General Assembly’s vote for an end to the Israeli occupation. The closure order is seen as an attempt to prevent accurate news about Palestinians from reaching the world. However, the closure of Al Jazeera’s bureau won’t stop journalists from reporting on the situation, with many brave Palestinian and foreign journalists still operating in the region.
The Gaza Government Media Office has criticized the Israeli move as a violation of press and media freedom, calling for international condemnation of the act. Israeli forces have been accused of targeting and killing journalists, including Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022. Al Jazeera has vowed to continue covering the situation despite the challenges imposed by the Israeli government.
