Mother of Georgia school shooting suspect indicted on unrelated charges

Marcee Gray, the mother of the 14-year-old Georgia student charged in the Apalachee High School shooting that killed four people, has been indicted in a domestic violence case involving her mother in 2023. The charges include exploiting and intimidating a disabled person or elderly adult, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property, and theft. These charges are unrelated to the mass shooting her son, Colt, was accused of committing. The teen’s father, Colin Gray, was also arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.

Marcee Gray could face up to 20 years in jail for the felony charge of elder exploitation. The case stemmed from an incident where Gray tried to have her mother confront her ex-husband and then taped her mother to a chair for nearly a day. She was also charged in a separate case for damaging her ex-husband’s work truck.

Marcee Gray pleaded guilty to charges related to concealing her license plate, damaging property, and family violence. She was sentenced to five years in jail, with the first 46 days spent in confinement and the remaining time on probation.

Despite these legal issues, Marcee Gray has apologized to the parents and families affected by the school shooting. She claimed she alerted the school on the morning of the shooting for an “extreme emergency” and urged officials to find her son. Residents in the Georgia town have expressed little sympathy for her father charged in the shooting.
