A Florida sheriff deputy, Leslie Boileau, was arrested for accidentally shooting his girlfriend, Polina Wright, in the head while cleaning and dry firing guns. Boileau and Wright had been drinking and received firearm cleaning supplies before the incident. Boileau provided training to Wright, which included pointing guns at each other, and admitted that his behavior was “sloppy.” He forgot that the rifle was loaded and accidentally fired a round, killing Wright. Boileau was fired from the department and arrested on a manslaughter charge. Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods stated that the department supports the investigation and emphasized that the actions of one officer impact the entire law enforcement community. The Ocala Police Department is working with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure justice is served in this case. Despite the tragic incident, Woods acknowledged that the majority of law enforcement officers perform their duties admirably on a daily basis. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department did not provide immediate comment on the situation. Boileau’s booking information was not reflected in Marion County Jail records as of Sunday morning.
