Colorado supermarket shooter found guilty on all 10 counts of murder by jury

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, the man charged with murdering 10 people in a mass shooting at a Colorado supermarket in 2021, was found guilty of all 10 counts of murder following a two-week trial. The shooting took place on March 22, 2021, at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. The victims included store employees, customers, and a police officer who responded to the scene.

Alissa pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with his defense team arguing that he was too mentally ill at the time of the shooting to be held legally responsible. However, prosecutors argued that Alissa’s actions during the shooting were deliberate and calculated, showing intent to kill as many people as possible. Witnesses testified that Alissa seemed to enjoy the violence, saying “This is fun” repeatedly during the shooting.

After being diagnosed with schizophrenia and deemed incompetent to stand trial, Alissa underwent treatment and was eventually found competent in 2023. The jury convicted him on all counts, meaning he will receive a sentence of life imprisonment without parole under Colorado law.

During the trial, Alissa’s parents testified that he had been acting strangely and believed he was being followed by the FBI in the years leading up to the shooting. His defense argued that his actions were a result of his mental illness, while prosecutors maintained that he was capable of distinguishing right from wrong. Ultimately, the jury found him guilty on all charges, holding him legally responsible for the tragic events that took place at the King Soopers store.
