State Lawmaker Stops Trump’s Effort to Secure Nebraska Electoral Vote

Former President Donald Trump has been pushing for Nebraska to change its electoral vote system in hopes of securing an additional electoral vote that could potentially impact the outcome of a presidential election. However, State Senator Mike McDonnell, whose support is crucial for this change, announced that he would not be backing any alterations to Nebraska’s current system of splitting electoral votes by congressional district.

The proposed bill to change the system would require 33 out of 49 votes in the legislature, which Republicans currently control. However, McDonnell’s statement means that the Republicans cannot afford any defections as Democrats are united in opposition.

The issue revolves around Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district, including Omaha, which has leaned towards Democrats in recent elections. If Vice President Kamala Harris were to win this district, it could be crucial in a close presidential race, potentially deciding the outcome.

Despite Trump’s efforts and support from Senator Lindsey Graham, it seems unlikely that the electoral vote system in Nebraska will be changed before the upcoming election. McDonnell suggested passing a constitutional amendment during the next legislative session and letting Nebraskans decide through a referendum.

The possibility of a tied Electoral College, as well as the significance of one electoral vote from Nebraska, has brought attention to this issue, with both parties closely watching the developments in the state.
