Streeting defends highlighting NHS shortcomings despite report warning negative rhetoric may cause patients to feel anxious – Updates on UK politics | Politics live

Wes Streeting, the health secretary, is defending his decision to publish a report highlighting the NHS’s failings. The report, conducted by Lord Darzi, painted a grim picture of the NHS, but Streeting emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis to prescribe the correct treatment. There is growing unease within the NHS about Streeting’s labeling of the NHS as broken, fearing it may spook patients and harm staff morale.

Streeting has also called for a national debate on potentially banning smoking in outdoor spaces such as pub gardens to address public health issues. He also expressed confidence that NHS waiting lists will be significantly reduced by the time of the next election. Additionally, Streeting highlighted the potential for the NHS to leverage data sharing and technological advancements to provide more personalized and preventive care.

Starmer, who is currently in New York, has refused to apologize for the cut, instead shifting blame to the previous government for leaving a £22bn hole in the economy. Starmer has also expressed a desire to meet with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump before the US election.
