Former President Donald Trump was briefed by U.S. intelligence officials about threats posed by Iran and alleged efforts to assassinate him. The briefing comes after a Pakistani national with ties to Iran was charged with a murder-for-hire plot targeting a U.S. politician or government official. Iranian officials deny involvement in the plots. U.S. intelligence has been warning for months about Iran meddling in the election to hurt Trump and boost his opponent Kamala Harris. In response to the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, Iran has been targeting Trump administration officials for years. Treasury sanctions were imposed on members and affiliates of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for engaging in terrorist plots, including assassination attempts against former U.S. officials. The U.S. remains focused on disrupting plots by the IRGC and its Qods Force and preventing acts of violence and intimidation by the Iranian regime. Federal authorities have investigated multiple alleged assassination plots targeting Trump, but no foreign government involvement has been found. Iran has vowed to retaliate for Soleimani’s killing and will attack at a time and place of their choosing. The U.S. is working to ensure Trump’s protection and election integrity amidst heightened threats from Iran.
