The Waffle House Index: A Tool for Emergency Crews in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

Meteorologists are tracking Hurricane Helene and predict it will make landfall Thursday evening along Florida’s northwest coast. Many are wondering which stores and restaurants, including the famous Waffle House, will remain open during the storm. Waffle House, known for staying open 24/7, has over 1,900 locations in 25 states, with most in the Midwest. The company’s main concern is safety, and they monitor weather forecasts and government advisories to keep their teams safe. The chain’s executives are closely monitoring the situation in the areas in Helene’s path and will act accordingly.

The Waffle House Index, created by former emergency manager Craig Fugate, classifies Waffle Houses as green (fully operational), yellow (limited menu), or red (closed) during emergencies. First responders use this index to know where to deploy resources and help during disasters. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration described Hurricane Helene as an “unusually large storm,” with its wind field extending up to 275 miles from the center. Heavy rainfall in the southeastern United States is expected, with storm-total amounts reaching up to 18 inches in some areas.

Areas at major flood risk include urban areas around Tallahassee, metro Atlanta, and western North Carolina. Residents are advised to evacuate if ordered to do so, have a plan for flood-prone areas, and avoid driving on flooded roads. Flash flooding, landslides, and river flooding are possible in affected areas. People are urged to stay informed and take precautions to stay safe during the storm.
