New York City Mayor Eric Adams surrendered to federal authorities after being indicted on five corruption charges related to allegedly taking bribes and campaign contributions from foreigners. Adams denied wrongdoing and vowed to fight the charges. The charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of campaign contributions from foreign nationals. The indictment alleges that Turkish diplomats and businesspeople funneled money to Adams’ campaign and provided him with luxury travel perks in exchange for favors, including pressuring city officials to allow the opening of Turkey’s consulate in New York. The alleged scheme dates back to 2014 when Adams was Brooklyn borough president, and continued through his successful 2021 mayoral campaign. Adams is the first NYC mayor to be charged with a federal crime while in office. The case has also led to the resignation of Police Commissioner Eric Caban and Adams’ legal adviser. Adams’ initial court appearance has been postponed until October 3. He faces serious allegations that could have significant consequences for his political career.
