The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office in Florida issued a grim warning to coastal residents who chose not to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Helene, advising them to write their name, birthday, and important information on their body in permanent marker for identification in case of death. The warning was posted on Facebook before the storm hit, emphasizing the life-threatening risk of not evacuating. The county, previously hit by Category 3 and Category 1 hurricanes, was expecting a storm surge of up to 20 feet from the Category 4 Hurricane Helene. Gene Taylor, a former official in Bay St. Louis during Hurricane Katrina, suggested having life jackets and an ax in case they needed to escape through the roof during severe flooding. This warning comes as many people have been rescued from rooftops in past storms. Evacuation is strongly recommended in the face of such potentially deadly weather events.
