Biden sends 1,000 troops to assist with Hurricane Helene in North Carolina

President Joe Biden has approved the deployment of up to 1,000 active-duty Army personnel to reinforce the North Carolina National Guard in response to devastating flooding from Hurricane Helene. The soldiers will help deliver life-saving supplies to isolated communities in North Carolina. Biden will visit the state to meet with flood victims and survey the damage. The soldiers will come from Fort Liberty in North Carolina and will use helicopters and vehicles to access hard-to-reach areas. The Army, Navy, Air Force, and Army Corps of Engineers are all assisting in the efforts. The Defense Department has activated helicopters for search and rescue operations and provided high-water vehicles. More than 6,000 National Guard personnel and 4,800 federal government workers are involved in recovery efforts. FEMA has distributed millions of meals, liters of water, generators, and tarps as part of the response. Vice President Kamala Harris is also touring storm damage in Georgia and plans to visit North Carolina, while Biden is heading to Florida later in the week.
