After a derailment on the Green Line caused the closure of service between North Station and Medford/Tufts, regular service has now resumed. Shuttle buses, which had been in place temporarily, have been phased out. The closure was necessary after a Green Line car derailed near Lechmere station in Cambridge on Tuesday. Seven passengers were sent to the hospital with minor injuries as a result of the incident. Preliminary findings suggested that human factors may have been involved in the derailment.
The National Transit Safety Board is actively investigating the incident and was on site Wednesday to assess the situation. Ryan Coholan, MBTA Chief Operating Officer, stated that repairs would be made and service restored once the investigation is complete. The MBTA announced on Thursday morning that regular service had resumed on the Green Line extension branch between North Station and Medford/Tufts & Union Sq.
The reopening of this section of the Green Line is welcome news for commuters who rely on this route for their daily transportation needs. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and the need for thorough investigations to prevent such accidents in the future.
