The third day of the 2024 Junior World Championships of Judo in Dushanbe, Tajikistan saw some thrilling action as athletes from around the world competed for gold. Azerbaijani Olympic Champion Zelym Kotsoiev was in attendance to support his brother but it was Georgia’s Luka Javakhishvili who claimed victory in the -81kg category with a decisive makikomi technique. Austrian Elena Dengg also shone, winning the -70kg category in golden score with an O-Uchi-Gari throw. Defending champion Komei Kawabata of Japan displayed his class by winning the -90kg category with a stunning Seoi-Nage throw and impressive groundwork skills. The winners were awarded their medals by Harvest Group Representative Mr Timur Tursumbayev and IJF Head Referee Director Armen Bagdasarov.
Javakhishvili expressed his gratitude for the support of the crowd and the amazing atmosphere in the arena, while Dengg was visibly thrilled to become the Junior World Champion. Kawabata’s victory earned him his second Junior World Gold, which was awarded by Olympic Silver Medallist Dr Askhat Zhitkeyev. Additionally, Tajikistan Judo Federation President Mr Ismoil Mahmadzoir presented a special award to retiring Tajik judoka Komronshokh Ustopiriyon, a 2-time Asian champion and 11-time world judo tour medalist.
The day was filled with excitement and camaraderie as athletes showcased their skills and sportsmanship on the mat. Fans and participants alike can look forward to more thrilling matches in the days to come at the Junior World Championships.
