Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey intervened in the case of Nibi, a 2-year-old beaver, to allow her to stay with rescuers at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue as an educational animal. Nibi’s fate had made its way to the state’s courts, but with the Governor’s decision, she will not be released into the wild.
Nibi had been found on the side of the road as a baby and attempts to reintroduce her to other beavers were unsuccessful. Rescuers at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue were thrilled with the decision, as Nibi had become a social media sensation and had garnered support from thousands of people through an online petition to save her.
Beavers play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems in Massachusetts by creating wetlands that support various wildlife. Despite beavers being common in the state, officials highlighted the importance of not interfering with wildlife except in cases where their safety is at risk.
Newhouse hopes that Nibi may eventually show an interest in living in the wild, but until then, she will remain at the rescue center where she has a large enclosure and a team of caregivers who are devoted to her well-being. The decision to keep Nibi as an educational animal will allow her to continue inspiring people to protect natural environments and wildlife.
