Police Hold University of Michigan Rabbi and Students at Gunpoint

An armed person broke into the residence of a rabbi in Michigan during a holiday dinner with Jewish students from the University of Michigan. The incident occurred late Wednesday, with the gunman entering through an open backdoor, stealing a bag, and brandishing a weapon before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no shots were fired, and no injuries were reported. The Southfield Police Department stated that the suspect had threatened to take everything and that it was likely a crime of opportunity. The police have identified one suspect and made another arrest in connection with the incident.

The attack took place at the beginning of Rosh Hashanah and the High Holy Days, following reports of previous attacks on or near the University of Michigan campus. Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents have increased across the country amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with a significant spike in hate incidents reported in recent years.

University of Michigan President Santa Ono emphasized the school’s commitment to student safety and encouraged anyone with information to contact the authorities. In response to the attacks, a volunteer group of students was formed to walk with Jewish students on campus. Ono reiterated that racism, violence, and hate have no place on campus and pledged to address and prevent such incidents. Investigations into the recent attacks involving Jewish students are ongoing as the community works to promote a safe and inclusive environment for all.
