Court directs Haitian group’s lawsuit against Trump, Vance to be handled by local prosecutors

A municipal court in Ohio has decided not to issue arrest warrants for former President Donald Trump and his running mate Senator JD Vance after a nonprofit organization attempted to file charges against them for false claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. The court referred the matter to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation. The claims made by Vance and Trump were deemed false by local and state officials, but they resulted in bomb threats and poor school attendance in the city of Springfield as the situation garnered national attention. The nonprofit organization, Haitian Bridges Alliance, based in San Diego, filed the charges in Clark County Municipal Court with the representation of former federal prosecutor Subodh Chandra, who is now an attorney in Cleveland. The organization advocates for migrants and immigrants, particularly in the Black and Haitian communities. Vance initially posted the claims about Haitian immigrants abducting and eating pets on social media, which were then repeated by Trump during a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite the court’s decision not to issue arrest warrants, the case has drawn attention to the harmful impact of false information and discrimination against vulnerable communities.
