The summer Nielsen Audio ratings revealed an unexpected outcome for Rich Shertenlieb’s show on WZLX. After his controversial departure from the Sports Hub and his co-host Fred Toucher, Shertenlieb’s show struggled to maintain a 1.8 share in the men 25-54 demographic. This low rating is a sharp contrast to the success of other shows on competing stations, such as “Toucher and Hardy” and “Felger and Mazz.”
Despite some positive aspects of the show, including compelling storytelling by former Patriot Ted Johnson and guest co-hosts, the overall lack of direction and imbalance in energy between Shertenlieb and co-host Michael Hurley have contributed to the show’s struggles. Shertenlieb has faced criticism for his exuberance and the show’s fast-paced, disjointed topics.
The addition of more music to the show in late August and a shuffling of the cast, with Mike Giardi’s role reduced and Emerson Lotzia taking on a larger role, have not significantly improved the show’s ratings. It also raises concerns about the loyalty of WZLX listeners, particularly after previous hosts Pete McKenzie and Heather Ford were abruptly replaced.
With parent company iHeart Media expressing concern over the show’s performance, the future of Shertenlieb’s show remains uncertain amidst competition from other successful radio programs in the Boston market. The struggle to find a balance between energy, direction, and engaging content continues to challenge Shertenlieb and his team as they strive to improve ratings and maintain listener engagement.
