Achieving progress in the battle against breast cancer

Find The Cause Breast Cancer Foundation, a local organization dedicated to preventing breast cancer, is gaining international recognition for their life-saving research. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, a Prevention Party will be held on Oct. 24 at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport to celebrate and support their work.

Breast cancer survivor and supporter of the organization highlighted the importance of Find The Cause’s approach to the disease. With one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and 90% having no family history of the disease, it is clear that environmental factors play a significant role in its development.

The foundation funds a consortium of four scientists who are making strides in preventing breast cancer. They focus on Primary Prevention by identifying and eliminating carcinogenic environmental chemicals, and Secondary Prevention by detecting exposure, predicting impending cancers, and enhancing cancer immunity.

According to Dr. David Sherr, one of the scientists, environmental chemicals contribute to 70%-90% of breast cancers, making most cases theoretically preventable. Breakthroughs in research have led to the development of drugs that intercept cancer formation and enhance the immune system.

The team’s goals for this year include optimizing cancer interceptors, developing breast tissue organoids for study, and testing their ability to detect molecules indicating carcinogen exposure. The public can reduce exposure to dangerous chemicals by educating themselves, buying organic products, using water filters, checking ingredients lists, and avoiding certain products and foods.

Find The Cause’s website offers resources on where chemicals are found and how to avoid them, empowering individuals to take steps towards preventing breast cancer. By supporting and spreading awareness of the foundation’s work, we can all contribute to saving lives and reducing the incidence of this disease.
