Tropical Storm Milton is gaining strength in the Gulf of Mexico, with the potential to become a major hurricane before possibly hitting the Florida Peninsula on Wednesday. Governor Ron DeSantis expanded a state of emergency to 51 counties in preparation for the storm, which could bring 5 to 8 inches of rain with localized totals up to 12 inches. There is uncertainty about the intensity and track of the storm, but there is increasing confidence that it will pose life-threatening hazards to the Florida west coast.
DeSantis warned of potential evacuation orders as early as Monday, citing the possibility of a significant storm surge that could have a severe impact on areas like Tampa Bay. Residents are advised to prepare for the storm and not let down their guard in cleaning up debris from previous hurricanes. Walt Disney World Resort remained open, with preparations in place for potential weather impacts.
The storm is currently 860 miles west-southwest of Tampa with sustained winds of 60 mph, moving east but expected to turn east-northeast. Accuweather forecasters predict Milton will strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane before making landfall near Tampa Bay on Wednesday. Sarasota and Manatee Counties are still recovering from Hurricane Helene and are working to secure debris ahead of Milton’s potential impacts. Residents are urged to prepare for the storm and stay vigilant as it approaches the region.
