A Boston nonprofit just received $7 million from MacKenzie Scott

Philanthropist and novelist MacKenzie Scott made headlines with her generous donation of $7 million to the Boston workforce development nonprofit Jewish Vocational Service (JVS). This donation marks the largest single individual gift in JVS’s history, providing much-needed support for their adult education and workforce development programs in Greater Boston.

Founded in 1938 during the Great Depression to assist Jewish immigrants seeking employment in America, JVS Boston has evolved to offer a wide range of job training programs in various fields such as animal care, automotive technology, banking, healthcare, and more. The organization also focuses on education advancement initiatives to prepare individuals for college and improve their English skills.

With an annual operating budget of $30 million, JVS Boston’s CEO Kira Khazatsky expressed gratitude for Scott’s donation, stating that it will allow the organization to respond to the ever-changing needs of the Massachusetts workforce. Trine Lustig, the Chief Advancement Officer of JVS Boston, emphasized that Scott’s gift provides the organization with the freedom to innovate and serve more people in a constantly changing economic landscape.

Scott, known for her significant charitable contributions, has pledged to donate at least half of her wealth to charity following her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. To date, she has given over $17 billion to more than 2,300 nonprofits. This latest donation to JVS Boston underlines Scott’s commitment to supporting organizations that make a lasting impact on communities and individuals in need.
