Florida beaches damaged by Hurricane Milton; assessment ongoing

Hurricane Milton wreaked havoc in Siesta Key, Florida, causing power outages, property damage, and closures of popular attractions such as the Salvador Dali museum. Despite this, some areas, including many beaches in Sarasota County, were relatively unscathed, allowing residents to venture outside and enjoy the sunshine. Other areas, like Siesta Key and St. Petersburg, were hit hard, with homes, buildings, and beaches sustaining significant damage. However, authorities reassured communities that the storm surge was not as severe as anticipated. The destructive winds from Milton damaged Tropicana Field, the home stadium of the Tampa Bay Rays, which had been converted into a base camp for emergency responders. The zoo animals at ZooTampa were moved to shelters and are safe, although the zoo sustained damage from high winds. The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, as well as the Salvador Dali museum, were closed due to the storm, with the museum’s iconic outer dome sustaining minor damage. Despite the challenges posed by Hurricane Milton, residents and institutions in the affected areas are grateful that no major harm was done to their treasured possessions and are focused on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of their communities.
