Eleven people, including a 1-year-old child, in Pennsylvania fell ill after eating toxic mushrooms. The incident occurred in Peach Bottom Township and involved members of an Amish family who had ingested the poisonous mushrooms they found in the woods for dinner. Emergency responders were alerted to a mass casualty incident and transported both pediatric and adult patients to the hospital. Victims ranged in age from 1 to 39, and all 11 individuals were treated for mushroom ingestion and released within hours. One member of the family had gone to a phone booth half a mile away to call 911 after becoming ill. The incident was cleared in just over an hour, and the Pennsylvania State Police have not yet provided an update on the situation. The Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company was involved in responding to the incident, and the spokesperson for the fire company, Gregory Fantom, provided details about the incident to news outlets. The cause of the poisoning was consuming wild mushrooms, and caution should be exercised when foraging for wild foods to avoid consuming poisonous plants.
