In a recent Job Doc column, Attorney Faraz Qaisrani shared his expertise on hiring developers from other countries, specifically India, for tech firms in Massachusetts, particularly in the Boston area. The demand for skilled professionals in the tech industry in Massachusetts has exceeded the supply, leading to a talent crisis. To combat this, some companies are exploring hiring developers from other countries.
Qaisrani explains that one common route for hiring international talent is through F-1 student visas for students graduating from US colleges or universities. These students can work for one to three years after graduating, depending on their role. For longer-term employment, H-1B visas are often used, allowing companies to hire employees for a longer period of time. However, the H-1B visa process can be challenging, with a low chance of selection in the annual lottery and significant costs for employers.
Another option for hiring international talent is through O-1 visas, which require demonstrating “extraordinary ability” in their field. This route is often used for top scientists or individuals with national or international recognition in their field.
With Massachusetts facing a low unemployment rate of around 3.5%, employers are required to consider various hiring sources to keep up with the demand for talent. Attracting and retaining skilled professionals is crucial for tech firms in the Boston area to remain competitive in the growing industry.
