Two suspects, Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both 24 years old, were arrested in connection with a shooting near Tennessee State University that left one person dead and nine injured. The shooting took place after the university’s homecoming celebration when gunfire erupted between two opposing groups. The suspects are believed to be involved in the exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of Vonquae Johnson, a 24-year-old man. Five people are suspected of being involved in the shooting, with two other suspected shooters hospitalized and two suspects still at large. Davis, one of the arrested men, has a previous criminal record for robbery, gun possession, and drug possession. He was found with a large gun at the time of his arrest.
Police Chief John Drake expressed concern over the disregard for human life shown by the shooters, stating that the entire criminal justice system must take violent gun crime seriously. Among the nine people hospitalized, three were minors, with non-critical injuries reported. The suspects were found at a short-term rental in Nashville and have been charged with criminal homicide.
The shooting occurred after the homecoming parade had ended, and police found shell casings on both sides of the street, indicating shots fired from different directions. The incident put innocent bystanders, including children, at extreme risk. The police are continuing their investigation into the shooting and are urging the criminal justice system to treat such incidents with the severity they deserve.
