A bipartisan group of lawmakers, led by Central Massachusetts legislators, have written a letter to Governor Maura Healey calling for immediate action to improve prison safety in the wake of a recent attack at the Souza-Baranowski supermax facility. The letter addresses the rise in violence, assaults, and illegal contraband in correctional facilities and calls for a more proactive approach to safety measures.
The attack at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley resulted in five correction officers being injured after three inmates allegedly stabbed two officers and attacked three others. The alleged assailants have been charged with serious offenses, according to the Department of Correction.
Lawmakers are hoping to address safety concerns not only for correction officers but also for inmates. They have been invited to a private meeting with the Department of Correction to discuss the issues raised in their letter and explore potential solutions.
The correction officers’ union has expressed support for the lawmakers’ efforts and is hopeful that their concerns will be taken seriously. The bipartisan group of officials is working together to ensure that necessary steps are taken to improve safety within correctional facilities.
