Three people have died and eight are injured after a deadly shooting at a Mississippi homecoming football game. The shooting occurred near North Highway 17, five minutes away from Lexington, Mississippi. It happened following an altercation between young men during a trail ride after the Holmes County Consolidated School’s homecoming celebration. Some of the injured victims were airlifted to a hospital in Jackson, with deputies searching for the suspects involved. The victims who were killed were identified as Martel Gibson, Shundra Chestnut, and John Jenkins.
This incident marks the third mass shooting in the South within a month, with a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, and a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia also occurring recently. A suspect in the Birmingham shooting was arrested, while a 14-year-old and his father were indicted in connection to the Georgia school shooting. Authorities are investigating the motives behind these tragic events, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
The sheriff is working to bring justice to those affected by this senseless violence, with the support of law enforcement agencies and the community. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence and the need for solutions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
