The city of Boston has announced that the North Washington Street Bridge will be renamed the William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge in honor of Celtics legend and civil rights activist Bill Russell. The renaming ceremony is set to take place on October 21, with Russell’s widow, Jeannine, past and present Celtics players, and Mayor Michelle Wu in attendance.
Russell was known for his dedication to civil rights and his efforts to support and mentor Boston’s youth and young athletes. Despite facing racial discrimination and segregation throughout his career, Russell never stopped speaking out against injustice. His legacy extends beyond his achievements on the basketball court, as he also marched with Martin Luther King Jr. and supported Muhammad Ali during the Vietnam War draft.
Throughout his career with the Celtics, Russell won 11 NBA championships and became the first Black head coach of any major United States sport. He was a 12-time All-Star, five-time MVP, and had his No. 6 jersey retired by all NBA teams. In addition, the NBA Finals MVP award is named in his honor.
President Barack Obama awarded Russell with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, recognizing his impact both on and off the court. Despite facing obstacles and adversity, Russell’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
