Locals in Portugal are outraged over the purchase of a beachfront property by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at the luxurious CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club. The Sussexes are said to have bought one of 300 soon-to-be constructed residences at the lavish development near the town of Melides, south of Lisbon, with prices starting at $4.7 million.
The estate is part of Discovery Land Company, founded by Mike Meldman, and is causing controversy as specific beach areas are now considered private, angering locals who have enjoyed them for years. Residents have expressed their dismay over the destruction of land for the wealthy, cutting off access to areas where they have created memories for generations.
Meghan and Harry have a family connection to the company through Jack Brooksbank, Princess Eugenie’s husband, who works in marketing for Discovery Land Company. The pair may acquire a “Golden Visa” through their Portuguese vacation home, granting them visa-free access to the European Union’s Schengen area.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not had a UK residence since 2023 when they left Frogmore Cottage, where they had lived since marrying in 2018. The purchase of the property in Portugal suggests a shift in their permanent residency and lifestyle. The CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club is marketed as an ideal luxury getaway for families seeking a coastal residential community.
