Messi and Inter Miami make MLS history with best record, dominate New England 6-2

Inter Miami and Lionel Messi have made history by finishing the Major League Soccer regular season with an MLS-record 74 points, surpassing the New England Revolution’s 2021 total by one point. The team also set a new MLS record for winning percentage at .765, with a 22-4-8 record, becoming the eighth team in league history to finish a season with only four losses.

Messi, who scored 20 goals and had 16 assists in 19 matches, had a standout performance with three goals and an assist in the second half against the Revolution. Luis Suarez also had a strong showing with a pair of first-half goals. Despite falling behind 2-0 early in the match, Inter Miami rallied back to win 6-2, with goals from Luca Langoni and Dylan Borrero for New England.

The victory solidified Inter Miami’s hold on the Supporters’ Shield and the No. 1 seed in the MLS Cup playoffs. There were concerns when Messi was fouled in the 74th minute and appeared to injure his right ankle, but it turned out to be just a scare. The Argentine superstar quickly recovered and went on to score two more goals to secure a hat trick.

With the historic win, Inter Miami has set new benchmarks for points, winning percentage, and fewest losses in a season in MLS history. The team’s remarkable accomplishment will go down in the league’s record books as they head into the playoffs as the team to beat.
