Dozens of Palestinians, including children, have been killed in attacks by Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza, according to reports from the Palestinian news agency Wafa. The attacks targeted displaced persons inside a school in Jabalia camp, civilians filling drinking water in Jabalia town, and a group near a hospital. The Israeli military has been focusing its assault on Jabalia as they try to prevent Hamas fighters from regrouping. Tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in Jabalia, where conditions are worsening, with reports of airstrikes causing widespread destruction and civilian casualties. Gaza City and Beit Hanoun have also been targeted, with civilians killed in bombings. Amidst the attacks, Israeli authorities are evacuating residents from northern Gaza, forcing them towards the overcrowded “humanitarian zone” of al-Mawasi.
Meanwhile, Iran has complained to the UN nuclear watchdog about threatened Israeli attacks on its nuclear sites, urging the UN to warn Israel against such actions. Israeli forces have intercepted drones in the Mediterranean Sea, and halted flights at Ben Gurion airport due to security concerns. In a separate incident, Israeli authorities have arrested seven citizens accused of providing military intelligence to Iran.
As tensions escalate, Germany has called on Israel to clarify incidents involving the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, and the French president has suggested the killing of a Hamas leader in Gaza could lead to ceasefire negotiations. The US is sending Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the Middle East to kickstart ceasefire talks and address the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister has emphasized the importance of implementing UN Resolution 1701 to maintain peace in the region.
