Former One Direction star Liam Payne, who tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, had multiple substances in his bloodstream at the time, including a cocktail of recreational drugs known as “pink cocaine.” The toxicology report revealed that Payne, 31, had cocaine, benzodiazepine, crack, and pink cocaine in his system. Officials suspect a hotel worker may have procured the drugs for him. A bottle of liquor, drug paraphernalia, and anti-anxiety medication were also found in his hotel room.
Pink cocaine is a mixture of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA, 2-CB, and caffeine, with no actual cocaine. It is typically powdery and pink in color due to food coloring, and may be flavored artificially. The substance has been growing in popularity in club and party settings, with the DEA issuing a warning for New York City due to its increasing prevalence. The drug has also been linked to hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in a recent lawsuit.
Fans around the world, known as Directioners, gathered to pay tribute to Payne in various cities after his death. The four surviving members of One Direction expressed their devastation at the loss of their bandmate. The circumstances surrounding Payne’s death, including whether he jumped or fell from the balcony, remain under investigation. The preliminary autopsy listed the cause of death as “multiple traumas” and internal and external bleeding. Payne was reportedly behaving erratically and was kicked out of a different hotel days before his death.
