Shake Shack penalized $244,000 for breaching child labor laws

Shake Shack has reached a settlement with Attorney General Andrea Campbell over child labor violations, resulting in a payment of $244,500. The fast food chain was found to have failed to obtain work permits for minors, scheduled minors to work during prohibited hours, and exceeded the maximum allowable hours for minors. More than 200 employees at 12 different Shake Shack locations across Massachusetts were affected by these violations. Half of the fine will cover penalties, while the other half will go towards a state fund dedicated to educating and enforcing Massachusetts employment laws. The investigation was launched after a complaint was received about the Woburn location, which was found to be scheduling minors beyond the legal limits. Shake Shack cooperated with the investigation, with Campbell emphasizing the importance of child labor laws in protecting young workers. The burger chain did not immediately comment on the fines. This settlement serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding labor laws to ensure the protection and well-being of young workers in the state.
