Smith, a Democrat, represented the 2nd Middlesex district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He had been serving in the state legislature since 2013 and was known for his passionate advocacy on behalf of his constituents. Prior to his time in the legislature, Smith worked as a teacher and a union organizer.
