A deadly attack targeting the headquarters of Turkey’s state-run Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) has led to at least five deaths and 22 injuries. The assault came shortly after a statement from a Turkish nationalist leader regarding the possibility of a renewed peace process with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The PKK, labeled a “terrorist” group by multiple nations, has been engaged in a long-standing conflict with Turkey. The timing of the attack suggests that the PKK may be sending a message that they are not ready to cease hostilities.
Security camera footage showed plainclothes attackers carrying assault rifles at the site in Kahramankazan, near Ankara, leading to suspicions that the PKK may be responsible for the assault. The Turkish government has launched a judicial investigation into the incident and deployed special forces to the area.
TUSAS, a key player in Turkey’s defence industry, is known for developing indigenous fighter jets, drones, satellites, and helicopters. The company is jointly owned by the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation and the government and employs around 15,000 people.
The international community has condemned the attack, with NATO Secretary-General expressing solidarity with Turkey while President Putin of Russia and the US National Security Council also offered condolences. Turkish President Erdogan described the attack as a “heinous terrorist act”. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Turkey in its efforts to maintain security and stability in the region amidst terrorist threats.
