The Boston Athletic Association and the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center have announced a multiyear partnership to invest over $1 million in the Roxbury facility. The BAA will provide $700,000 in direct financial contributions over four years, along with Boston Marathon entries that could see fund-raising totals exceed $1.3 million. The funds will support the center’s athletic and wellness programs, including youth track and field events, senior fitness programs, and wellness resources for the community.
BAA CEO Jack Fleming emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports, stating that supporting events and channeling resources back into the community aligns with their mission. The partnership aims to address health disparities in Roxbury, where there is a significant gap in life expectancy compared to neighboring areas.
The announcement, attended by various local leaders, marked the launch of the RLTAC’s 30th-anniversary fund-raising campaign, with a goal of raising $5 million to enhance programs and resources at the center. The facility, named after former basketball star Reggie Lewis, has faced criticism in recent years for balancing the needs of students and the local community. The partnership with the BAA signals a renewed commitment to serving Roxbury and surrounding neighborhoods.
RLTAC executive director Michael Turner expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in creating sustainable change. The collaboration aims to empower the community through fitness classes, mindfulness training, and discussions on healthy habits. The investment from the BAA is seen as a significant step towards achieving the center’s goal of closing health gaps and improving wellness in the area.
