Massachusetts State Lottery winner: Man to split $1 million prize with his mother

Timothy Mortell, a resident of Chicopee, Massachusetts, recently won $1 million from the “$2,500,000 Merry & Bright” scratch ticket game. Mortell chose the cash option for his prize and received a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes. He plans to both invest his winnings and share them with his mother.

The winning ticket was purchased at Yazzy’s Market on Meadow St. in Chicopee, and the store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The “$2,500,000 Merry & Bright” game still has four $1 million prizes and three $2.5 million grand prizes remaining to be claimed as of Oct. 28.

The scratch ticket is part of a series of holiday-themed games released by the Massachusetts Lottery on Oct. 15. Another $1 million prize has been claimed from the “$1,000,000 Merry & Bright” game, along with a $50,000 top prize from the “Naughty or Nice Cashword” game. Non-winning holiday tickets can also be entered into Second Chance drawings for a chance to win prizes between $100 and $10,000.

Mortell’s win is a cause for celebration, not just for himself but also for his family, as he plans to share his good fortune with his mother. The Massachusetts Lottery continues to create opportunities for players to win big this holiday season with their selection of festive scratch ticket games.
