Newly graduated Massachusetts state trooper steps down following OUI accusations

A recent Massachusetts State Police Academy graduate, James Doran, has resigned from his position as a state trooper following charges related to an alleged drunk driving incident in Tewksbury. Doran, 27, was charged with operating under the influence and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Despite pleading not guilty, Doran decided to resign from his position rather than face a hearing to determine his status. His lawyer, Robert Normandin, expressed confidence that the case would be resolved in Doran’s favor.

Doran allegedly rear-ended another vehicle while off-duty, and responding police reported that he and his passenger exhibited signs of impairment. Doran refused a breath test and a field sobriety test. He graduated from the State Police Academy on October 9 and was set to be on probation with the department for the next year. His resignation makes him ineligible for reinstatement, according to State Police policy.

Normandin emphasized Doran’s talent and potential as a trooper, despite the unfortunate incident. Doran’s misconduct will be reported to the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. This incident comes amidst ongoing challenges for the Massachusetts State Police, including the recent death of another cadet from Doran’s graduating class. The agency will now move forward without Doran’s services as he navigates the legal process surrounding his charges.
