GM Recalls Large Pickups and SUVs Due to Risk of Rear Wheel Lockup

GM Recalls Nearly 462,000 Diesel Pickup Trucks and SUVs Due to Rear Wheel Lock-Up Risk

Detroit, MI — November 13, 2024— General Motors (GM) is recalling approximately 462,000 diesel pickup trucks and SUVs due to a significant safety hazard involving potential rear wheel lock-up. This recall impacts several models, including the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (1500, 2500, and 3500) from the 2020 to 2022 model years, as well as the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a transmission control valve that may wear out over time and, in rare instances, lead to rear wheel lock-up. Such a malfunction could dramatically increase the risk of a crash. Signs of a possible malfunction might include harsh shifting prior to any wheel-related problems.

In response to the safety concerns, GM plans to update the vehicle’s transmission control software to monitor the valve for potential wear. If wear is detected, the transmission will restrict shifting to fifth gear, averting the risk of wheel lock-up when shifting from eighth gear. GM will also offer warranty coverage to address defects in the transmission control valve.

Vehicle owners will receive recall notifications by mail on December 9. GM’s investigations began after an owner complaint was discussed with U.S. safety regulators in January, leading to the discovery of 1,888 reports related to wheel lock-up. Though three minor injuries were reported, GM clarified they were not linked to any crashes caused by the issue.

This proactive measure underscores GM’s commitment to safety and customer satisfaction.
