Massachusetts Astronaut Declares She’s Healthy Following Reported Weight Loss

Suni Williams Addresses Weight Loss Rumors Amid Space Station Stay

Needham, MA – Astronaut Suni Williams, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), recently dispelled rumors regarding her weight, stating that her weight remains unchanged since her arrival in June. In an interview with the New England Sports Network’s Clubhouse Kids show, Williams remarked, “There are some rumors around… that I’m losing weight and stuff — no, I’m actually right at the same amount.”

Williams traveled to the ISS with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore as part of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft mission, originally intended to last a week. However, complications with the spacecraft’s thruster system have delayed their return, now scheduled for February on a different spacecraft.

Recent media reports, including one from the New York Post, suggested that Williams had experienced significant weight loss, citing an unnamed NASA source. In response, NASA confirmed that all astronauts undergo routine medical evaluations monitored by dedicated flight surgeons and reassured that they are in good health.

Addressing the rumors, Williams highlighted the importance of demonstrating an active and healthy lifestyle to children. She explained that while her weight has not changed, her body may appear different due to fluid shifts that commonly occur in space. “I think my body has changed a little bit, but I weigh the same,” she noted.

Additionally, Williams maintains her fitness regimen in space, utilizing the station’s treadmill, bike, and weightlifting equipment while performing exercises such as squats. Earlier this fall, she even ran the Falmouth Road Race from orbit.

A Needham High School graduate, Williams has participated in two other space missions since her selection as a NASA astronaut in 1998 and previously held the record for cumulative spacewalking time by a woman astronaut until 2017.
