Health Secretary Wes Streeting has unveiled a reform plan for the NHS, including banning trusts from using agencies to fill entry-level positions and linking pay for NHS trust chief executives to performance. He also announced the introduction of NHS league tables to address performance variations across hospitals.
Streeting defended his plans in response to criticism, stating that poor senior managers are the NHS’s ‘guilty secret’ and need to be managed out. He emphasized the need for accountability and support for leaders to drive serious change in the NHS.
The reform package has already faced backlash from NHS leaders, with concerns raised about the potential demoralization of staff by the introduction of league tables. Streeting argued that addressing poor leadership is essential for improving performance and providing better care for patients.
The proposed reforms draw parallels to past attempts by Labour to introduce hospital league tables in 2001, which were ultimately dropped due to opposition. Streeting’s plan also aligns with the appointment of former Health Secretary Alan Miliburn as a lead non-executive member at the Department of Health and Social Care, emphasizing the focus on improving care for patients.
Streeting’s speech at the NHS Providers conference in Liverpool will further outline the reform agenda, addressing issues of accountability, performance, and management in the NHS. The proposed changes aim to drive improvements in healthcare delivery and address systemic challenges in the NHS.
