Celtics’ Kristaps Porzingis Progressing in Recovery Ahead of Season Debut
BROOKLYN – Kristaps Porzingis is making significant strides in his recovery but is not yet ready to debut for the Boston Celtics this season. The talented big man, who is recovering from offseason leg surgery, participated in an active pregame warmup prior to the Celtics’ 139-114 victory over the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center on Wednesday.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla reported that Porzingis engaged in various drills including midrange jumpers and half-speed drives. Despite being sidelined, he showcased his dedication by traveling with the team and actively supporting from the bench while dressed in street clothes. Mazzulla praised Porzingis’ commitment, noting that his engagement not only aids his own transition back to play but also fosters professionalism and camaraderie in the locker room.
Teammates echoed this sentiment, highlighting Porzingis’ positive influence on the squad. Payton Pritchard, who contributed 23 points in the win, referred to Porzingis as an “unbelievable player” whose positivity resonates throughout the team. Likewise, Jaylen Brown recognized Porzingis’ observant contributions during the game, stating that his vocal presence signals he is "getting close" to a return.
Porzingis, who suffered his injury during the previous NBA Finals, and the Celtics are eyeing a December return; however, a specific date for his comeback has yet to be confirmed. As the Celtics continue their season, Porzingis’ teammates and coaching staff remain optimistic about his recovery and eagerly await his reintegration into the lineup. The anticipation for his return is palpable among the team, which has displayed strong teamwork in his absence.
