University of Rochester campus faculty targeted by antisemitic posters

The University of Rochester campus was recently covered in posters accusing Jewish faculty members of controversial actions related to the conflict in Gaza. The posters targeted individuals, making allegations of ethnic cleansing, racism, hate speech, and intimidation. University President Sarah Mangelsdorf strongly denounced the posters as disturbing, divisive, and intimidating, stating that they run counter to the university’s values. The university has taken steps to notify those depicted in the posters and is conducting an investigation into the incident. This comes after a previous incident involving AI-generated images mocking the destruction in Gaza and heightened tensions on college campuses nationwide following the Gaza conflict.

This incident follows previous incidents on campus, including swastikas and antisemitic messages found in a tunnel, and protests urging the university to take specific actions related to Gaza. The Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester expressed deep concern, stating that these incidents have created a tense atmosphere for Jewish students, faculty, and staff. They called on the university to take immediate and unequivocal action to address the incident.

University President Sarah C. Mangelsdorf also issued a statement denouncing the posters and stating that antisemitism will not be tolerated at the university. The Department of Public Safety is leading an investigation to hold those involved accountable. The incident has sparked discussions about creating a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the university community, including Jewish individuals.
