In a recent interview with Euronews, Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, a Vice-Chair of the IPCC, emphasized that reaching Net Zero is not only possible but necessary to combat global warming. She highlighted the importance of reducing energy use and increasing the presence of urban trees to capture carbon dioxide and create more sustainable cities.
However, challenges remain in sectors like petrochemicals and cement, where emitting CO2 is unavoidable. Bertrand Piccard, President of the Solar Impulse Foundation, stressed the need for costly direct air capture technologies to address these emissions.
Despite the obstacles, experts believe that achieving Net Zero is within reach. With existing technology and a shift towards renewable energy and energy efficiency, it is possible to significantly reduce carbon emissions. However, urgent action is needed as current efforts are not progressing quickly enough.
In conclusion, while Net Zero is technically feasible, it will require major societal and technological changes to become a reality. Many countries, including the EU, have already made it a legal obligation, but the continued growth of fossil fuel use underscores the need for a significant transformation to achieve a sustainable future.
