President-elect Donald Trump made his first public appearance since winning the White House at the America First Policy Institute gala in Palm Beach, Florida. During the event, Trump announced that North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will lead the Department of the Interior and also nominated former independent presidential candidate and anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Trump’s pick for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, resigned from his seat in the House, effectively ending the House Ethics probe into allegations against him. The nomination of Gaetz has sparked controversy, with some calling it reckless and questioning the checks and balances in place to constrain a president like Trump.
The gala was attended by prominent figures including Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, co-chairs of the new Department of Government Efficiency; Sylvester Stallone, who described Trump as the “second George Washington”; and RFK Jr. President Trump commended Musk for his work and joked that he couldn’t get him to leave Mar-a-Lago.
The event marked Trump’s reflection on the election and his appreciation for those who supported him, including Speaker Mike Johnson. The America First Policy Institute gala was a significant moment for Trump as he began to announce key appointments to his administration.
