The COP29 climate negotiations in Baku, Azerbaijan have shifted the focus from results to the process itself. Climate Analytics CEO Bill Hare criticized the COP process, pointing out that warming projections have stayed the same or even increased despite promises and policies. The presence of over 1,700 people connected to fossil fuel interests at the talks was also highlighted, calling for a “firewall” between lobbyists and negotiators to ensure fairness.
Additionally, new data from Climate Trace revealed that cities in Asia and the U.S. are the most polluting, with Shanghai emitting the most greenhouse gases. The dataset showed that Earth’s total carbon dioxide and methane pollution increased, with major contributions from China, India, and Russia.
Despite the challenges and criticism, the COP process has delivered results in reducing projected warming and providing finance for those in need. Small island nations emphasized the importance of defending the Paris Agreement and protecting the world’s most vulnerable populations.
