President Marcos Jr has ordered the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people and cancelled flights as a potentially catastrophic typhoon, Man-yi, approaches the Philippines. With wind speeds of 240km/h, the storm is set to make landfall near Catanduanes province, with the central region of Bicol facing a potentially catastrophic and life-threatening situation.
The provinces of Catanduanes and Camarines Sur are at high risk, with both still recovering from a previous storm in October. President Marcos Jr has directed government agencies to prepare for the worst-case scenario in anticipation of the typhoon’s impact.
Evacuation centers are already housing hundreds of people, and more are expected to be evacuated as the storm approaches. Dozens of flights have been cancelled, and dangerous storm surges are expected to reach up to 3 meters in coastal areas of Luzon.
The Philippines faces an average of 20 tropical storms each year, with October already seeing deadly flooding and landslides from previous storms. With the unprecedented occurrence of four storms in the Pacific Ocean at the same time in November, authorities are urging residents to take precautions and prepare for the potentially devastating impact of Typhoon Man-yi.
