Ware Man Convicted of Four Counts of First-Degree Murder in 2018 West Brookfield Case
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. announced that Matthew Locke, a 38-year-old Ware resident, has been found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in the brutal 2018 killings of Sara Bermudez and her three children in West Brookfield. The jury reached its verdict after extensive deliberation, having been presented with over 1,000 pieces of evidence and hearing testimony from 70 witnesses over the course of four weeks.
The tragic events unfolded on March 1, 2018, when authorities discovered the bodies of 38-year-old Sara Bermudez, as well as her children — Madison, 8, James, 6, and Michael, 2 — at their home around 3:30 PM. The case drew significant public attention due to the horrific nature of the crimes, described by District Attorney Early as "some of the most heinous ever seen by this office."
In light of the verdict, Early expressed hope that the conviction might provide some measure of justice for the grieving family left behind. After ten hours of deliberation, the jury’s decision marks a significant moment in this long and emotionally charged legal battle, reflecting the severity of the crimes committed.
Locke’s sentencing is expected to follow, as the community awaits the next steps in a case that has left many reeling since the tragic loss of the Bermudez family. The trial’s conclusion underscores the perseverance of the justice system in addressing violent crimes and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
As this case serves as a grim reminder of loss, it also stands as a testament to the thorough work of law enforcement and the legal system dedicated to seeking justice for victims.
