Russian forces have launched a significant air attack on Ukraine, targeting vital energy infrastructure as temperatures hit sub-zero in the war-torn country. Ukrainian officials have described it as the largest missile attack since August, with drones and missiles hitting peaceful cities and critical infrastructure. The attack has caused serious damage, with power supplies cut in multiple city districts, leaving some areas without electricity. At least two people were killed in the overnight attacks.
In response to the attack, Poland and its allies carried out an air operation, scrambling fighter jets to respond to the large-scale Russian missile attack on western Ukraine. The attacks have also resulted in casualties, with two railway workers killed at a depot in Dnipropetrovsk and a woman killed in her car in the Lviv region. The attacks have caused significant damage to power infrastructure, leaving thousands without heating and causing fires in garages.
The largest energy provider in Ukraine reported serious damage to its thermal power stations as a result of the drone attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Russia launched around 120 missiles and 90 drones in the attack, seeking to cripple the country’s energy infrastructure. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has intensified, with Zelensky emphasizing the need for diplomacy to end the war with Russia next year. Despite receiving aid from the US, Zelensky has stated that Ukraine has not received even half of the weapons allocated to it.
