Former U.S. Senator and New Hampshire Republican gubernatorial candidate Kelly Ayotte has criticized Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey for her response to a migrant rape case involving Cory Alvarez, a 26-year-old migrant from Haiti accused of raping a 15-year-old disabled girl. Healey defended the vetting process for migrants at emergency shelters, where the incident took place. Ayotte demanded her Democratic opponent, Joyce Craig, denounce Healey’s endorsement and sanctuary policies.
Craig’s team responded, calling Ayotte’s attack a political ploy and highlighting Craig’s work with law enforcement to reduce violent crime. Ayotte has been critical of Craig’s support for sanctuary policies and border security bills. Ayotte’s stance has stirred controversy as she accuses Craig of supporting policies that have caused chaos in Massachusetts.
The incident at the Comfort Inn in Rockland, Massachusetts, where the rape occurred, involved a migrant family housing program. Alvarez, a Haitian national, entered the U.S. lawfully through the CHNV parole program, which permits a limited number of migrants to fly into the U.S. from certain countries.
The Biden administration expanded this program to include Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Cubans, allowing up to 30,000 people per month to enter the country. The incident has reignited debate over border security and migrant vetting processes. Ayotte’s criticism of Healey and Craig’s support for sanctuary policies has become a focal point in the New Hampshire governor’s race.
