Two individuals convicted for smuggling Indian family who froze to death while crossing US-Canada border | US news

Following a tragic incident where an Indian family froze to death while attempting to cross the Canada-US border, two men have been convicted of human smuggling charges. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, also known as “Dirty Harry”, and Steve Shand were found guilty after a jury trial in Minnesota. They were part of a criminal enterprise that helped migrants cross from Canada into the United States, leading to the deaths of the Patel family.

The court heard that the family was left to fend for themselves during a blizzard with temperatures dropping to -23C. Border officials became suspicious when they found Shand’s van in a ditch and later discovered several migrants, disoriented and freezing. Tragically, the bodies of Jagdish Patel, Vaishaliben Patel, and their two children were found dead near the border.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, called the incident a “mind-blowing tragedy”, highlighting the dangers of such crossings during the winter. Testimony from survivors revealed they were promised a better life but were ultimately led to their deaths by smugglers.

While Shand’s defense argued he was unwittingly roped into the scheme, prosecutors claimed he was a driver in the operation coordinated by Patel. The jury ultimately found both men guilty of human smuggling charges, holding them responsible for the deaths of the Patel family and the suffering of other migrants involved in the ill-fated crossing.

The case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross borders with the help of smugglers and the tragic consequences that can result from such illegal activities.
